A Legendary Name. A Legendary Team. A True Classic.
Offered here is a beautiful Eddy Merckx Team 7-Eleven road bike, built on a handmade Columbus Acciaio TSX chromoly steel frame, crafted in Belgium and inspired by one of the most iconic professional teams in cycling history.
This bicycle comes from an exceptional 38-bike vintage and collectible collection, all owned by the same rider. With so many bicycles in rotation, each example—including this Merckx—has been ridden very little and carefully preserved.
This is not just a bicycle—it is a piece of professional cycling history.
Eddy Merckx, De Rosa & the Birth of a Legendary Brand
After retiring from professional competition, Eddy Merckx set out to build the finest road bicycles possible—machines worthy of his racing legacy. To do so, he enlisted the expertise of Ugo De Rosa, one of the most respected framebuilders in cycling history.
Ugo De Rosa played a crucial role in designing early Eddy Merckx frames and training builders during the company’s formative years. The result was a line of bicycles that combined Belgian racing geometry with Italian framebuilding excellence, quickly earning a reputation at the highest levels of professional cycling.
By 1986, Eddy Merckx Cycles had expanded its model lineup, offering race-proven frames built with the same attention to detail, materials, and performance demanded by elite riders.
Team 7-Eleven & Eddy Merckx Cycles — Historical Context
The 7‑Eleven cycling team was one of the most influential professional teams of the 1980s, widely credited with bringing American cycling onto the world stage. Founded by Jim Ochowicz, the team evolved from a U.S. domestic program into a respected European contender.
During the mid- to late-1980s, Team 7-Eleven rode Eddy Merckx bicycles, marking an important collaboration between an ambitious American team and one of Europe’s most prestigious bicycle manufacturers.
At that time, Eddy Merckx frames were hand-built in Belgium, often using Columbus steel tubing, and engineered for the rigors of European professional racing. These bicycles reflected Merckx’s uncompromising standards for stiffness, durability, and race geometry.
Notable riders from the Eddy Merckx / Team 7-Eleven era include:
-
Andy Hampsten — winner of the 1988 Giro d’Italia, the first American to win a Grand Tour
-
Davis Phinney — one of the most successful American sprinters of the era
-
Ron Kiefel, Alex Stieda, and Eric Heiden, who helped establish the team’s international reputation
The Eddy Merckx–Team 7-Eleven partnership symbolized a pivotal moment in cycling history: the meeting of American ambition and European craftsmanship, at the dawn of the globalization of professional cycling.
This bicycle reflects that exact chapter.
